The Proposition is pleased to present Balint Zsako’s “Modern Dance, (Series 1 – 4);” a collection of individually framed paintings in which an arm, a string, and the ground match up and continue between adjacent works. They are placed freely on shelves and are intended to be handled by the audience. The paintings can be picked up, examined closely, and used to construct new narratives by changing the order that they are in. From diptychs to triptychs to all works in the exhibition, the number of pieces that are grouped together changes what they say.
In my work I try to distill as many disparate aspects of contemporary art into works on paper as possible. Some can be taken as instructions for Performance art pieces, Sculptures or Land art, while others pay specific attention to Geometric Abstraction, Conceptual text art or Figurative painting.
In addition to these references it is the themes of sex, love, struggle and identity that animate the paintings. Physical distortions serve as parallels to psychological states, mechanical appendages recall the conflict between the organic and the industrial while objects precariously constructed out of wood and string mirror the complexities of personal relationships.
