Hasty + Hasty

Time and space are intimately related, but our perception usually
separates the two.  We imagine our bodies extending through space,
stopping at our hair and skin.  Time adds another dimension we cannot
easily travel.  Our lives are played out across both space and time,
though the connection to the past is usually not seen.

We have developed a strictly representational technique which
graphically records the peoples connections to their past, through
their movement.  The vast majority of photography aims to freeze out
the dimension of time, or perhaps blur its effects.  Our aim in this
project is to reveal the subtle connection between time and space in
human motion.

Our technique gradually mixes the time and space recorded, rather than
showing the space occupied by a person at a given time.  We show how
people move through space and time.  As you sweep your gaze across the
space recorded in these images, you are also traveling through time.
An arm extends out in all four dimensions as you pull back.  A sudden
leap leaves your feet at the four-dimensional point where they
supported you, while you float free in space.

None of our images are manipulated after the image of space and time
is recorded by the camera.
